To qualify for SASSA Old Age Grant you need to meet certain requirements. What qualifies a person for Old Age Grant is as follows;
i. The applicant must be a South African citizen be it a permanent resident or someone seeking refuge in South Africa.
ii. The applicant must be 60 years old or above.
iii. The applicant must live in South Africa.
iv. Of all the existing grants the applicant must not receive any of them.
v. No state institution must care for you.
vi. The applicant must earn R86,280 and below if you’re single and R172,560 if you are married.
vii. The applicant must have an asset not more than R1,227,600 if single and an asset of R2,455,200 if married.
How Much Does SASSA Old Age Grant Pay?
Unlike the other SASSA grants the Old Age Grant is quite huge. The amount being payed to those who qualify for this grant is R1, 980 per month. But there is an exception which is R2, 000 for beneficiaries older than 75 years.
How Do I Get Payed For SASSA Old Age Grant?
There are several ways an applicant can be payed. Depending on the applicant these are the mode of payments for SASSA Old Age Grant applicants to choose from;
i. Receiving the cash payments from designated points issued by SASSA on a particular day.
ii. Payment through bank wire(the bank will transfer the money to the bank account you provided electronically) or through a Post bank account. Kindly note that the Post Bank transfer comes with charges.
iii. Payment through institutions such as Old Age Homes.
Kindly note that you can employ the services of a procurator at the SASSA office to take the money on your behalf if you can’t do so on your own.
What Causes SASSA Old Age Grant Suspension?
An applicant’s application may be suspended when SASSA notices the following;
i. An application is suspended when there is a notice of change of finances in the life of the applicant.
ii. An application maybe suspended if SASSA detects a fraudulent activity in your application process. This can be in a form of giving false information.
iii. An application maybe suspended when the applicant fails to co-operate in the process where the application is being reviewed.
When Does SASSA Old Age Grant Stop?
Per the rules of the SASSA the Old Age Grant will stop functioning in the following cases.
i. When the beneficiary passes away.
ii. When the beneficiary gets enrolled in a state institution like a prison or a rehabilitation center.
iii. The Old Age Grant will stop working if the beneficiary has not made any claim for three consecutive months.
iv. The grant will stop when there is a notice that the beneficiary is no longer in South Africa for over a period of 90 days.
Those who get the chance to get employed or have a contract with a state institution will have their grant slashed by 25% of the total amount received. This will take effect four months after your employment. However it will be reversed to the full amount when your contract with the state institution is terminated.
How Can I Restore SASSA Old Age Grant After Suspension?
If your SASSA Old Age Grant has been suspended or lapse due to the reasons mentioned above, the only way to restore the grant is to make another application 90 days after the suspension or lapse.
